During a recent meeting with military officers, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his admiration for the troops stationed in Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This information was reported by state media, as noted by a global news outlet.
Kim conveyed his heartfelt encouragement to the soldiers and officials operating in the Kursk region of Russia, where it is believed that North Korea has deployed over 10,000 fighters, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
In his address to military personnel in the capital, Kim stated, "Our army is heroic." He emphasized that the military is fulfilling its responsibilities and will continue to do so in the future.
In April, North Korea officially acknowledged the deployment of its soldiers to the front lines to support Russian forces, marking a significant development in their military collaboration.
This deployment follows a strategic partnership agreement signed between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin in June of the previous year, which includes a mutual defense agreement.
Intelligence reports from South Korea and Western nations indicate that North Korea has sent over 10,000 soldiers to the Kursk region in 2024, along with artillery, missiles, and long-range rocket systems. Reports suggest that approximately 600 North Korean soldiers have died, with thousands more injured while fighting alongside Russian troops.
Kim's comments come at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump is advocating for a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, engaging in discussions with leaders from both nations.
